Required Minimums

Colorado law (C.R.S. § 10-4-619) requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $15,000 per accident for property damage

This is commonly written as 25/50/15.

Why Minimums Are Not Enough

The $25,000 per person minimum is grossly inadequate for most injury claims. A single ER visit can exceed $25,000. Surgery or hospitalization easily surpasses the $50,000 per accident limit. Experts recommend at least 100/300/100 coverage.

Optional but Recommended Coverage

  • MedPay: Covers your medical bills regardless of fault
  • UM/UIM: Protects you against uninsured and underinsured drivers (16% of Colorado drivers are uninsured)
  • Collision/Comprehensive: Covers your vehicle damage

Frequently Asked Questions

Fines up to $500, license suspension, SR-22 requirement, and potential vehicle impoundment.
No, UM/UIM is optional. However, with 16% of Colorado drivers uninsured, it is highly recommended.
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility required after certain driving violations. It proves you carry the state minimum insurance.
